Description

The U.S. Taekwondo Committee is proud to announce the 7th Annual U.S. Open Taekwondo Hanmadang will be held at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA from June 18-20, 2015. After 3 successful years of holding this event in Chicago, the event has resided in Colorado Springs where in 1992, the first ever U.S. Open Taekwondo Championship was created. The U.S. Open Taekwondo Hanmadang is expected to host well over 1,300 participants from all over the world. The most famous Taekwondo practitioners from China, Taiwan, Korea, as well as European and Pan American countries will be represented. Be sure not to miss the Opening Ceremonies, which never fails to excite, with new performances and events every year! For example, previous years have includied world famous Taekwondo Demonstration Teams such as the Korean Tigers and the Sehan University Demo Team.

Taekwondo sparring is very well known as an Olympic sport. However, because of the high skill level and physical conditioning needed to be successful at sparring, the average Taekwondo School in the United States only has approximately 10% of the student body participating in sparring class and competitions. The U.S. Open Taekwondo Hanmadang events are for the other 90% of Taekwondo students who do not participate in sparring. The U.S. Open Taekwondo Hanmadang offers the opportunity for the 90% to showcase their skills in traditional forms, creative forms, creative board breaking, power breaking, and demonstration team events.

Requirements: All Ages and Ranks. Each participant will have 90 seconds to perform a Taeguek or Kukkiwon Black Belt form. NO music.

Requirements: All Ages and Ranks. Each team will have 90 seconds to perform a Taeguek or Kukkiwon Black Belt form. Synchronization and team work is important. NO music. 2-10 Members.

ICFWO • Individual Creative Forms (poomsae) without weapons

Requirements: All ages and ranks. Each participant will have 90 seconds to perform a creative form. There are 6 compulsory techniques: 2 front snap kicks (any variation), 2 round house kicks (any variation), and 2 side kicks (any variation). NO Weapons. Music is HIGHLY encouraged.

Requirements: All ages and ranks. Each individual will have 60 seconds to setup and 60 seconds to break a minimum of 1 and maximum of 6 boards at their discretion. All boards are 1/4 inch pine.

IJH • Individual Jumping High Kick

Requirements: Age 8 and above. Any Belt Level. Each participant will have 30 seconds to attempt to break with running jumping front snap kick. Each participant has only 1 attempt to break the board (1/4 inch pine board) for each round. Participant must break the board to advance to the next round. The participant to break the highest board will be declared the winner.

IPKH • Individual Power Breaking Knife Hand (downward)

Requirements: Age 13 and above. Any Belt Level. Each participant will have 1 attempt to break as many boards (each pine board is 1 inch thick) as they declare with a downward Knife hand strike. All boards will be placed on a board holding stand. The board holding stand is 4 inches tall and will be placed on the floor. The participant who breaks the most boards wins.

IPSSK • Individual Power Breaking Skipping Side Kick

Requirements: Age 8 and above. Any Belt level. Each participant will have 1 attempt to break as many boards (each pine board is 1 inch thick) as they declare with a skipping side kick. All boards will be placed on a board holding stand. The boards must be as high as the participant's waist. The participant who breaks the most boards wins.

Requirements: Age 8 and above. Any Belt level. Each participant will have 1 attempt to break as many boards (each pine board is 1 inch thick) as they declare with a back kick. All boards will be placed on a board holding stand. The boards must be as high as the participant's waist. The participant who breaks the most boards wins.

ISHK • Individual Spinning Hook Kick

Requirements: age 8 and above. Any Belt level. Each participant will have 30 seconds to break as many boards as possible with spinning hook kick. All boards are 1/4 inch pine boards.

Requirements: All ages and ranks, with no member age requirments. Each team will have 2 minutes to setup followed by 7 minutes to perform a demonstration in a 12m x 14m ring. Synchronization and team work is important. Music is HIGHLY encouraged. NOTE: Teams must be prepared to provide 2 sets of their own breaking materials and props as the winning team will have the honor of performing at the opening cermonies!

Requirements: All ages and ranks, but must have a minimum of 5 members age 12 or under. Each team will have 2 minutes to setup followed by 7 minutes to perform a demonstration in a 10m x 10m ring. Synchronization and team work is important. Music is HIGHLY encouraged. NOTE: Teams need only provide 1 set of their breaking materials and props as the winning team will NOT perform at the opening cermonies.

IAST • Individual Archery – Stationary Target

Requirements: Ages 6 and above, beginner (0-12 months), intermediate (13-35 months) and expert (36+ months) archery experience levels, no taekwondo rank required. Participants have a maximum of 90 seconds to shoot six (6) arrows at a distance of 20 yards (60 ft). Points will be earned in 2 categories: Time and accuracy. Each participant will provide his or her own bow, quiver and field tip arrows. Bows must be either a traditional long bow or a recurve bow. NO compound bows will be allowed.

IADST • Individual Archery – Distance Stationary Target

Requirements: Ages 13 and above, beginner (0-12 months), intermediate (13-35 months) and expert (36+ months) archery experience levels, no taekwondo rank required. Participants have a maximum of 90 seconds to shoot three (3) arrows at a distance of 60 yards (180 ft). Points will be earned in 2 categories: Time and accuracy. Each participant will provide his or her own bow, quiver and field tip arrows. Bows must be either a traditional long bow or a recurve bow. NO compound bows will be allowed.

IADS • Individual Archery – Dynamic Shooting

Requirements: Ages 13 and above, beginner (0-12 months), intermediate (13-35 months) and expert (36+ months) archery experience levels, no taekwondo rank required. Participants have a maximum of 60 seconds to shoot two (2) arrows at a distance of 20 yards (60 ft), while in motion. Points will be earned in 2 categories: Time and accuracy. Each participant will provide his or her own bow, quiver and field tip arrows. Bows must be either a traditional long bow or a recurve bow. NO compound bows will be allowed.

New Archery Events

Archers… Draw… Aim…Loose! Under the stewardship of Grandmaster Fueschsel, the organizing committee is excited to announce three new traditional archery events at the US Open Hanmadang this year. Test your aim and stamina in Individual Archery – Stationary Target, Individual Archery – Distance Stationary Target, and/or Individual Archery – Dynamic Shooting.

These events will be held on Thursday, June 18th at the Cheyenne Mountain State Park Archery Range. For a summary of these events, check the event description section on this tournament profile page. New Team Demo Events

Great News! You now have two opportunities to show your school spirit by showcasing your taekwondo demonstration skills at the US Open Taekwondo Hanmadang. The organizing committee has split the team demonstration event into two new categories, Recreational Team Demo and Championship Team Demo. You may now register your team members for one or both events, as desired.

Recreational Team Demo is intended to encourage a wide range of students of varying skill levels to work together and showcase their school spirit through demonstration of taekwondo skills in a team environment. Teams are from 5 to 40 members, of any age and belt rank, with at least 5 members being age 12 or younger.

Championship Team Demo is the same event as in years past but with a new name. It is intended to be a more demanding competition for highly dedicated students to work together and showcase their school spirit through demonstration of taekwondo skills in a team environment. Teams are from 5 to 40 members, of any age and belt rank, and no limitation on team makeup. For this event, the winning team will be given the honor of performing their demonstration a second time during the opening ceremonies!

If you would like to take advantage of the convenience of staying near the event or if you have family coming to visit, special booking rates are now available. Staying at the hotel even if you live in Colorado Springs is a great way to meet and socialize with other participants from around the world.
