Description

The U.S. Taekwondo Committee is proud to announce the 6th Annual U.S. Open Taekwondo Hanmadang will be held at the World Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA from June 20-21, 2014. After 3 successful years of holding this event in Chicago, the event has resided in Colorado Springs where in 1992, the first ever U.S. Open Taekwondo Championship was created. The 2014 U.S. Open Taekwondo Hanmadang is expected to host well over 1,300 participants from all over the world. The most famous Taekwondo practitioners from China, Taiwan, Korea, as well as European and Pan American countries will be represented, and a world famous Taekwondo Demonstration Team will perform at the Opening Ceremonies.

Taekwondo sparring is very well known as an Olympic sport. However, because of the high skill level and physical conditioning needed to be successful at sparring, the average Taekwondo School in the United States only has approximately 10% of the student body participating in sparring class and competitions. The U.S. Open Taekwondo Hanmadang events are for the other 90% of Taekwondo students who do not participate in sparring. The U.S. Open Taekwondo Hanmadang offers the opportunity for the 90% to showcase their skills in traditional forms, creative forms, creative board breaking, power breaking, and demonstration team events.

ITF • Individual Traditional Forms (poomsae)
Requirements: All Ages and Ranks. Each participant will have 90 seconds to perform a Taeguek or Kukkiwon Black Belt form. NO music.

TTF • Team Traditional Forms (poomsae)
Requirements: All Ages and Ranks. Each team will have 90 seconds to perform a Taeguek or Kukkiwon Black Belt form. Synchronization and team work is important. NO music. 2-10 Members.
  • Team of 2 to 10 Members
  • 90 seconds to perform
ICFWO • Individual Creative Forms (poomsae) without weapons
Requirements: All ages and ranks. Each participant will have 90 seconds to perform a creative form. There are 6 compulsory techniques: 2 front snap kicks (any variation), 2 round house kicks (any variation), and 2 side kicks (any variation). NO Weapons. Music is HIGHLY encouraged.

ICFWW • Individual Creative Forms (poomsae) with weapons
Requirements: All ages and ranks. Each individual will have 90 seconds to perform a creative form. Music is HIGHLY encouraged.

ICB • Individual Creative Breaking (Kyukpa)
Requirements: All ages and ranks. Each individual will have 60 seconds to setup and 60 seconds to break a minimum of 1 and maximum of 10 boards at their discretion. All boards are 1/4 inch pine.

  • 60 seconds to setup
  • 60 seconds to perform
IJH • Individual Jumping High Kick
Requirements: Age 8 and above. Any Belt Level. Each participant will have 30 seconds to attempt to break with running jumping front snap kick. Each participant has only 1 attempt to break the board (1/4 inch pine board) for each round. Participant must break the board to advance to the next round. The participant to break the highest board will be declared the winner.

IPKH • Individual Power Breaking Knife Hand (downward)
Requirements: Age 13 and above. Any Belt Level. Each participant will have 1 attempt to break as many boards (each pine board is 1 inch thick) as they declare with a downward Knife hand strike. All boards will be placed on a board holding stand. The board holding stand is 4 inches tall and will be placed on the floor. The participant who breaks the most boards wins.
  • Individual Event
  • 30 seconds to perform
IPSSK • Individual Power Breaking Skipping Side Kick
Requirements: Age 8 and above. Any Belt level. Each participant will have 1 attempt to break as many boards (each pine board is 1 inch thick) as they declare with a skipping side kick. All boards will be placed on a board holding stand. The boards must be as high as the participant's waist. The participant who breaks the most boards wins.

IPBK • Individual Power Breaking Turning Back Kick
Requirements: Age 8 and above. Any Belt level. Each participant will have 1 attempt to break as many boards (each pine board is 1 inch thick) as they declare with a back kick. All boards will be placed on a board holding stand. The boards must be as high as the participant's waist. The participant who breaks the most boards wins.
  • Individual Event

ISHK • Individual Spinning Hook Kick
Requirements: age 8 and above. Any Belt level. Each participant will have 30 seconds to break as many boards as possible with spinning hook kick. All boards are 1/4 inch pine boards.

TD • Team Demo
Requirements: All Ages and ranks. Each team will have 7 minutes total (not including setup) to perform a demonstration. Teams must provide 2 sets of their own breaking materials and props. The winning team will perform at the opening ceremonies. Synchronization and Team Work is important. Music is HIGHLY encouraged.
  • Team of 2 to 40 Members
  • 120 seconds to setup
  • 420 seconds to perform

The Schedule of Events has been finalized! The Organizing Committee recognizes that many participants have been unable to complete their registrations without a confirmation of schedule. The U.S. Open Taekwondo Hanmadang will take place at the World Arena on Friday, June 20 and Saturday, June 21, 2014. The official Headquarters Hotel has been announced to be the Double Tree by Hilton located within walking distance from the World Arena. If you would like to take advantage of the convenience of staying near the event or if you have family coming to visit, special booking rates are now available. Staying at the hotel even if you live in Colorado Springs is a great way to meet and socialize with other participants from around the world. In addition, the convenience of staying near the event may benefit your family after a long day of competition and festivities, especially if you do not live near the World Arena.

Ring assignments are subject to change at any time and for any reason. The organizing committee may deem changes necessary or desirable even minutes prior to competition. Please take this into account when making your plans.

During the tournament, you can watch for your division to be called using the Holding Calls button at the top of this page. Not all tournament hosts use this feature.
